"Best Partition Manager out there" by hockemoto
have used this program to resize, create, delete, format and even once, rebuild the MBR. This was across 4 large drives of different makes on 11 different partitions. All this was done rather quickly, without any data loss.

My 3TB Hard Drive Only Uses 2TB

Situation

“To get more storage space, I bought a new hard drive which is 3TB. After I connect it to my computer, I find that there is only 2TB can be used in Disk Management. Why is there such a situation in my computer? Is there any wrong with my hard drive?” .

Why My 3TB Hard Drive Only Uses 2TB

In fact, the above problem is common and you might have encountered such a situation before. In the case, you complain that the hard drive manufacturer is irresponsible. Actually, there is nothing wrong with the hard drive. The only reason is that your hard drive is in MBR format.

As you know, MBR and GPT are two different partition type in disk. MBR can only support at most 2TB disk whereas GPT breaks this limitation and it can support disk size up to 18 EB. If your 3TB hard drive is in MBR format, it is possible that it only uses 2TB in computer. To solve this problem and make the best use of disk space, you need to convert your 3TB hard drive to GPT disk type instead of MBR type.

How to Convert MBR to GPT

When searching “my 3TB hard drive only uses 2TB” in Google, you can find many forums discussing about this issue, and the most answer is to convert disk from MBR to GPT. But how to change your MBR disk to GPT disk? Generally, there are three tools you can use.

Delete All Volumes in Disk Management

When mentioning disk conversion, you may think of Windows built-in tool called Disk Management at once. You can use this tool to do partition and disk management. As to converting MBR disk to GPT disk, firstly you need to use its “Delete Volume” feature to delete all volumes on your hard drive. Then you can achieve your aim by using “Convert to GPT Disk” function.

However, this is a demerit:
You must delete all volumes which makes your data loss. You must backup data previously. If there is a volume or partition on disk, you can’t change MBR to GPT, because “Convert to GPT Disk” feature becomes grey.

Convert to GPT by Diskpart

In addition, Windows has another utility called Diskpart command which can be used to solve disk conversion problem. Just type command line one by one: list diskselect disk ncleanconvert gpt as the following screenshot. This way also has a limitation that you must clean all data.
