I have a computer running Windows Server 2003, and the Disk 2 is split into several parts: primary partition – C drive, three data partitions: D, E, F drive and an unallocated partition. Due to the very irrational disk space distribution, I am now suffering from low disk space issue, so I need partition extension. How to merge unallocated partition to primary partition on Windows Server 2003 (PS: There is a data partition between the primary partition and the unallocated space)?
1. Diskpart command line
It provides users with basic disk and partition management features such as delete volume and extend volume. However, the function to extend volume in Server 2003 works only when there is unallocated space right behind target partition and the partition can not be system drive or boot drive. Therefore, it is not the best solution to partitioning disk.
2. Disk Management tool
As we all know, the functions Extend Volume and Shrink Volume are introduced since Windows Server 2008, so users who want to execute partition resizing operations for Server 2003 have to adopt indirect ways. Usually, partition deleting can not be avoided, and then users need to rebuild a new larger partition. Nevertheless, data loss will inevitably happen to system partition containing heaps of vital data. Thus, it is also a solution with low recommendation.
Since Windows built-in disk management solutions are not that helpful in practical situations, we suggest trying third party server partitioning software. Although there is lots of software on market, performance of them varies, making it quite difficult for users to identify. As a result, we highly recommend users to use professional MiniTool Partition Wizard Server Edition.
After realizing software downloading and installation, users need to follow those steps:
1. Launch MiniTool Partition Wizard to open its main interface:
2. In the main interface, choose the partition to be extended from disk mapping area and click “Extend Partition” from left action panel.
3. Under “Take Free Space from” tab, directly choose an unallocated space and drag the sliding handle rightwards to gain all available free space from the specified location. After that, click “OK” button to go back to main interface of the software.
4. From the main interface above, users can preview the effect of merging the chosen unallocated space and primary partition. If it is satisfying, click “Apply” button in the upper left corner to make final confirmation.
We have successfully finished by using the powerful server partition software. Hurry to experience the high performance of MiniTool Partition Wizard Server Edition via the quick link here.
