Disk space reallocation is in urgent need when low disk space issue happens to my Windows 2003 Server computer. The system partition – C drive was configured to have 50 GB when I had the hard disk partitioned. As time flies, free space in C drive is eaten up by data, so I intend to expand it. I wonder how to extend C drive space in Windows 2003 Server computer.
1. Using diskpart command line
As one of the built-in disk partitioning toolkits in Windows, diskpart command allows users to basically manage Windows Server 2003 disks, partitions and volumes. However, those features are somewhat defective and the extend command is a typical example. To use it, all those requirements should be met: Firstly, the partition to be managed should be formatted with NTFS. Secondly, the unallocated space for extension must be the next contiguous space on the space disk, if target disk is a basic one, while for dynamic disk, the unallocated space can be empty area on any dynamic disk. Thirdly, the volume to be managed must be data volume, otherwise the extend feature is not activated. As the actual situations seldom meet those preconditions, extend command provided by diskpart is not that helpful.
2. Using built-in disk manager
Users pinning high hope on Disk Management Tool in Windows Server 2003 for disk partitioning will be disappointed, for there is no direct way to get a partition extended. (Extend Volume and Shrink Volume are introduced after Windows Server 2003). Therefore, users have to delete partition and use the space to recreate partition. It is believed that no one would like to try those risky and energy-consuming operations.
3. Adopting third-party tools
There are disk partitioning tools supporting extending the boot partition in Windows Server 2003 even when there is no unallocated space available or the unallocated partition is no completely neighboring to target partition. Here, professional MiniTool Partition Wizard Server Edition is highly recommended for users. The software has gained wide popularity by virtue of comprehensive functions, wide compatibility and high operability. To let users have a better understanding of the server partition manager software, we would like to introduce how to expand Server 2003 system partition with the recommended software.
Users need to firstly perform software downloading and installation. After that, follow the guidance below to fulfill the whole expansion process.
Step 1. Launch MiniTool Partition Wizard Server Edition to open its main interface.
Step 2. In the main interface of the software, choose the system partition – C drive from disk mapping area and click “Extend Partition” in “Operations” column.
Step 3. Under “Take Free Space from” tab, choose a partition with much unused space left or an unallocated space to take disk space. Then, drag the sliding handle to gain needed amount of space and click “OK” button to go back to main interface of the software.
Step 4. Returning to main interface, users can see that the chosen partition has been resized. Since it is only preview effect, users need to click “Apply” button in the upper left corner to make final confirmation.
We are successful to increase partition size for Windows Server 2003 by using MiniTool server partition manager. For more information about certain operations, please visit the quick link here.
